Michigan Public Health 101 - April 11th 4 - 6 PM at Lansing Community College

This session will focus on what Michigan law currently says concerning public health structure, organization, and legal authority. Real-world examples will be shared to illustrate routine and emergency public health practices. Legal mechanisms that help assure community health in our state will also be discussed.

New Options to Control Pharmaceutical Costs -- This program is now set for Monday, April 26, 2021 at 9:30 a.m.

States across the country are pursuing new options to control pharmaceutical costs. The session will explore new initiatives by the Michigan Medicaid program and Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of Michigan to reduce pharmaceutical costs.

 

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) -- January 2020 Program

This session focuses on Adverse Childhood Experiences -- also known as ACEs. The healthcare focus is on children under the age of 18 who live in poverty, among fractured families, incarcerated parents and wthin traumtic circumstances. In 2016, it was estimated that two-thirds of Michigan aduls reported one or more adverse childhood experiences. This session reviews those circumstances and policy solutions to address them.

Local Public Health -- October Program

Legislators and their staff members are invited to travel to two Michigan local health departments: one in the state's center and the other in southeast Michigan.You'll see first-hand how local health departments prioritize community health issues and how much they can vary between communities. MSU transportation is available for both visits -- to the Central Michigan District Health Department in Mount Pleasant on Monday, Oct. 14, 2019 and to the Macomb County Health Department in Mt. Clemens on Monday, Oct. 21, 2019. Register now for either or both trips.

Behavioral Health -- September Program

A new access study from the Michigan Health Endowment Fund reveals gaps in care, indicating a pressing need for expansion of care. The research shows that 38 percent of Michigan residents with a mental illness and 80 percent  with a substance use disorder aren't receiving treatment. Please see this full study and a summary of this landmark work.
