Public Data Access

All SOSS data is released to the public six months after a survey is completed. There are over 20 years of datasets that you can download or to analyze online, and there are no restrictions on its use (we just ask that you cite SOSS)!

The MSU State of the State Survey (SOSS) is a public opinion phone survey of Michigan adults. SOSS findings are published in top-tier academic journals, guide policy decisions, and receive national media coverage. From pilot projects to full-scale data collection, the MSU State of the State Survey is your source for high-quality public opinion data in Michigan. SOSS has been the force behind scores of faculty, student, and non-profit research projects and publications over the last 20 years.

Director, State of the State Survey

Dr. Ballard is the Director of the State of the State Survey and Professor of Economics at Michigan State University. He is a widely published and well-known for his ability to communicate the complexities of economics in everyday language. His research focuses on such topics as tax policy, healthcare financing, and Michigan's financial future. He can be reached at ballard@msu.edu or 517-353-2961.

Project Manager, State of the State Survey

Grey Pierce is the Project Manager of the State of the State Survey. They are responsible for question design, survey instrument programming, sample management, data processing, data weighting, and preparing supporting materials. In addition to their role at SOSS, Grey is also the Assistant Director of Usability/Accessibility Research and Consulting, the Outreach Coordinator for the EDA University Center for Regional Economic Innovation at the Center for Community and Economic Development, and the Vice Chair of the MSU Accommodating Technology Community.
