Potential Explanations for Our Michigan Presidential Election Polling Miss

IPPSR’s State of the State Survey (SOSS) suggested an easy path to victory for Hillary Clinton in Michigan’s 2016 general election, but Donald Trump won the state by a narrow margin on his way to an Electoral College victory. Our survey was hardly alone in showing a Clinton lead (only one Michigan public survey in all of 2016 showed a Trump lead), but SOSS was the furthest off from the final result.

Each Political Party Builds on Its Strengths, in Michigan and Nationwide

The 2016 general election is in full swing. Both presidential nominees are visiting Michigan to lay out their economic plans and attract voter support. According to election forecaster Nate Silver, Michigan currently ranks as the eighth most important swing state (based on the probability that each state will provide the decisive vote in the Electoral College).
