Summary
In the design of Michigan transportation infrastructure, frost depth is an essential consideration. Frost-susceptible soils cause excessive heave and instability on infrastructure. This study aimed to develop an accurate model for predicting frost depths and resulting heave.
Policy Implications
After being tested in other states, the statistical model has proven to be successful. Similar data was used to change frost laws in Minnesota, where the Department of Transportation estimates it will save $14 million and increase the life of roads by 10 percent. The model must get funding before it can be implemented in Michigan. Enacting the program could lead to improved trucking load regulations and less road damage.
