Summary

In countries with a strong political consensus in favor of an energy transition, the pace of change has been slow. In the United States, one factor slowing this is the political resistance of the fossil fuel industry. Case studies of political coalitions, including an example in Michigan, examine monetary influence.

Policy Implications

It is important for policymakers to pay close attention to the various non-state actors involved in the renewable energy debate. In order to understand the pace of the energy transition, political spending from the fossil fuel industry in comparison to grassroots organizations must be examined.
