Availability of Data

The State of the State Survey (SOSS) is administered by the Office of Office for Survey Research (OSR) at Michigan State University's Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR). IPPSR conducts SOSS as a public service. Although the investigators on each round of the survey reserve limited rights with respect to publication of the results, the data are intended to go into the public domain. All surveys (and all questions on each survey) are thus intended to be available publicly.

The following persons are given immediate access to the data from each round as soon as the field work is completed and the data are ready for analysis:

• The principal investigators (working group) on the given round, for unrestricted use of the data;
• Any instructor at MSU to use SOSS data for instruction (including distribution to students);
• Any office at MSU for institutional research and outreach;
• Any enrolled student at MSU for instruction, research, or outreach (but not for submission for publication until six months have elapsed).

The principal investigators on each round of SOSS have an exclusive right to analyze the data for purposes of publication for a period of six months after the completion of the field period for each round.

Documentation

In addition to designing and conducting the survey, IPPSR prepares a Methodological Report for each round. This report contains the questionnaire, a codebook with frequency distributions, and information about the field procedures, sample, and members of the working group for the given round.
