Urban Policy Activities
Urban Policy Workshop
Michigan State University's (MSU) Urban Affairs Programs (UAP)
and the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR)
invited MSU faculty and off-campus policy experts, recognized for
their study of urban-related issues, to participate in a discussion
of urban concerns. UAP and IPPSR then convened a mix of 70 people
from the campus, business and policymaking communities in a two-day
discussion that identified imminent issues and related research
needs pertaining to Michigan's urban areas. The meeting engaged
participants in discussing urban issues that would most likely face
community leaders and the legislature in the near future in three
broad areas: Race, Urban Inequality, and Social Justice; Urban Housing
and Land Development; and Urban, Economic and Fiscal Concerns.
The workshop resulted in a series of white papers and a book entitled
Urban Policy Choices for Michigan
Leaders and a new Urban Research Interest Group, described
in more detail below.
Urban Research Interest Group
Born out of the 2001 MSU Urban Policy workshop, the Urban Research
Interest Group (URIG) is sustained by Michigan State University's
Urban Affairs Programs, Center for Global Change and Earth Observations,
the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research and the Office
of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies. Faculty
members involved in this effort are involved in continuing forums
and research projects. Many in the group authored papers
on urban policy research topics discussed at the conference.
Most recently the group was involved in a land use focused event
entitled: The
Built Environment: Social Capital and Human Health Conference.
More information about URIG sponsors is available online.
