Daniel
Rosenthal
Legislative
Intern Award
The
Michigan State University Institute for Public Policy and
Social Research and James
Madison College are pleased to administer the annual Daniel
Rosenthal Legislative Intern Award on behalf of MSU.
IPPSR and James Madison College honored the young men and women nominated for 2009 awards in special ceremonies this March.
2009 Award Winners

Gopi Patel, of Sterling Heights, a political science, pre-law major at Michigan State University, is winner of the 2009 Rosenthal Legislative Intern Award. She was nominated by Rep. Kevin Green of Wyoming.
Her work in the office included handling mass mailings, answering constitutuent calls and relaying information to the legislator and to voters.
Said Patel in her award application: "I saw my textbook come alive.... This internship showed me the consequences of the decisions made by the representatatives, seniors and Gov. Granholm on families."
The internship has encouraged her to put her law degree to work as a legislative staff member.
Kimberly Crawford, who hails from Grand Rapids, is winner of the 2009 Vernon Ehlers Award given to the runner-up. She will complete her Bachelor of Science degree in Community Development, this August at Central Michigan University.
Crawford was nominated by Rep. Robert Dean of Grand Rapids. She conducted research, wrote letters and assisted with constituent advocacy.
She is completing her education at Central's campus in Grand Rapids while working full time and raising her family. She's been pursuing her degree parttime for the past 10 years.
"When given the opportunity for this legislative internship, I jumped at the chance to experience hands-on learning during such an exciting time in our nation's history." She hopes to complete a Master's Degree in Public Administration while working in community development.
Daniel Rosenthal was one of MSU's first Legislative Student Intern
Program participants in January 1977. He interned with former Sen. Jack Welborn. After his unfortunate passing
in June of that year, the Rosenthal family established this award
to pay tribute to the dignity of Dan's life and acknowledge the
value that he placed on his experience as a legislative intern.
To recognize Rosenthal's enthusiasm, intelligence, sincerity and dedication,
stipends are awarded to a winner and a runner-up chosen from all nominees. The runner-up receives the Vernon Ehlers Award, named for U.S. Rep. Vernon Ehlers who established the honor.
Both awards carry a cash stipend. A committee composed of representatives from
the Michigan House, the Michigan Senate and Michigan State University makes award selections.
